De nieuwe sushibar Howie Roll is sinds een week geopend aan Vredenburg in Utrecht. Hoewel veel mensen bij sushi meteen denken aan vis, is hier uitsluitend plantaardige sushi te bestellen. Sushi komt hier in een ‘fastfoodmandje’ en is binnen enkele minuten klaar om op te eten.
Eigenaars Selwyn Maan and Oscar Claessen hebben de deuren van Howie Rolls net een week geopend. “We worden goed ontvangen door de mensen die ons vinden”, vertelt Selwyn. “Je merkt dat er veel mond-tot-mond reclame is. Veel mensen worden doorverwezen door een vriend of vriendin.”
Plantaardige sushi
Bij Howie Roll vinden ze een zonnig gekleurde sushibar. Een bestelling plaats je op het scherm bij de entree. Enkele minuten daarna ligt de sushi klaar in een mandje. Daarbij schenkt Howie Roll de drankjes van het Nederlandse siropenmerk Saru Soda.

Drempel verlagen
Selwyn en Oscar hebben al eerder samengewerkt. “Wij hadden een winkel in de Foodhallen en een franchise in Deventer. Uiteindelijk hebben we de dat achter ons gelaten en zijn we hiermee begonnen. We willen de drempel voor plantaardig eten verlagen door het snel, gemakkelijk en betaalbaar te maken.”
Howie Roll serveert dus geen ‘all you can eat’ california rolls met veel vis en mayonaise, wat volgens de eigenaars voor sommige mensen even schakelen is. Selwyn: “Ik denk dat dit nog niet bij iedereen in het patroon zit, niet iedereen snapt wat er hier gebeurt. Alles wat wij serveren is in huis gemaakt, vers. Zelfs onze vegan ebi garnaal wordt in huis gemaakt.”
Black Jack
Selwyn: “Mijn favo is de ‘Black Jack’ roll. Deze bevat jackfruit en heeft iets weg van een makreelsalade. De jackfruit komt uit een voedselbos uit Oost Afrika, dat werkgelegenheid voor vrouwen in Oeganda creëert.”
Dat de sushi van Howie Roll geen vlees, vis en zuivel bevat, wordt ook niet van de daken geschreeuwd. “Het is gewoon sushi, van plantaardige ingrediënten. Niet iedereen deelt dezelfde mening dat het sushi is. Maar iedereen is welkom. Wat wij willen, is duurzaam en maatschappelijk betrokken ondernemen.”
